Dairy Queen 'community give' program raises money on Nov. 24

Debbie Davies and Al Davies, owners of the Sequim Dairy Queen, introduced a Community Give program last June, donating 40 percent of sales during a two-hour time period once a month to a peninsula charity. Photo by Ashley Miller

Supporting peninsula causes is a ‘win-win situation,’ owner says

By ASHLEY MILLER

Giving is, by definition, a selfless gesture.

But that doesn't mean it can't benefit the donor.

Community Give Night, presented by Dairy Queen owners Debbie Davies and Al Davies, is intended to help the family-owned business and charity of choice: a Helen Haller Elementary Art program organized by the Haller Parent-Teacher Organization two years ago to offer art time to enrolled students.

The PTO funds though grants and donations made by the Sequim community. Monday evening Nov. 24, 40 percent of Sequim Dairy Queen proceeds will benefit the organization and more specifically, help pay for first-grade art lessons.

Then, this spring, the restaurant will host an art walk and ice cream social celebrating the completion of lessons.

"It's a win-win situation for everybody," said Debbie Davies over coffee. "If this is a charity close to your heart, come in and support it," she encouraged.

She and her husband started the community give program last June and choose a different peninsula charity each month.
"We wanted to give back to the community because our community gives a lot to us," she explained. "If we want the community to continue supporting us, why shouldn't we support it?"

The community give program will continue through 2009. "If business continues to be good and the community continues to support this, we will continue the program," Davies said. "We've been pleased with the results we've got. Now, I'm just trying to get the information out there so that when we put 'community give' on the reader board, people know what it's about."

Charities are picked in advance through Aug. 1, but applications are being accepted for later dates. Preference is given to "local groups that are oftentimes left out," Davies said.

Additional monetary donations are accepted on behalf of the chosen charity during a designated community give event.

Some charities create a "wish list" with needed items. People who donate an item from the list get a free ice-cream cone.

Wish list details, as well as upcoming community give dates and charities, are posted online at
www.sequimdairyqueen.com.

To be put on the waiting list as a recipient, apply in person at the Sequim Dairy Queen.
